Simavita is a company established to develop solutions that improve quality of life across the Global Healthcare Spectrum. The SIMsystem™ and its related products are based on over 10 years of research and development aimed at finding a better system for the assessment and management of continence. Our focus remains, as it always will, on providing a sense of dignity and grace to those with incontinence.
In 1996, the first patent was taken out for the development of a system to effectively assess and manage incontinence. Over a 10-year period, a motivated and multi-disciplinary team was actively involved in the design and development of a prototype system and in the planning of the trial.
This group was led by Dr Fred Bergman, a Melbourne doctor who had an interest in the issues that face the ageing and those who care for them. Dr Bergman conceived an idea of a wireless monitoring device which could identify the level and type of incontinence by creating a live time bladder chart. Dr Bergman patented his idea in 1996 and continued to further develop a prototype product.
In 2004, the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) provided a $250,000 grant as part of its Clinical IT in Aged Care programme to run a proof of concept clinical trial.
Sadly, Dr Bergman passed away suddenly in 2005 but the project continued with the help of some dedicated supporters who believed in Dr Bergman and his idea.
Additional patent applications specifying further improvements to the system were submitted in November 2004, May 2006 and May 2007. In December 2005, the company was also selected for Ausindustry's COMET programme.
A working prototype was completed in August 2006 and a trial was successfully conducted at Dava Lodge in Mornington Victoria, which concluded in November 2006.
Preliminary findings have confirmed significant efficiencies and improvements in quality of care as a result of the use of the system.
Philippa Lewis, founder and driving force behind Sanicare Pty Ltd, assumed Chief Executive Officer role in April 2008 to move the company forward, after the passing of founder Dr Fred Bergman in early 2005.
The SIMsystem™ was launched onto the Australian market in August 2009. Since then it has been rapidly gaining support from the residential aged care sector, the community and health professionals everywhere. There is significant interest from global markets, with a European licensee already established.
